Sitting out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the islands of the Azores are fascinating for their culture, but especially for their flora and fauna - many species of which are unique to the islands.

As a Portuguese dependency, the Azores have much in common with the Portuguese mainland, especially in terms of language and cuisine. However, as islands, they have also grown up to be fiercely independent and proud of their special traditions. As the traditional stopping-off point for seafarers throughout the generations, the Azoreans have a love for the sea, but also a deep respect for its awesome power, but also the abundance of good things that it gives to the islands.

The tradition of welcoming visitors is still a strong part of Azorean culture, so wherever you travel around the different islands, you will be welcomed with great hospitality and friendship.

Set amongst the warm currents that course up through the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores are one of the best places on earth for whale-watching throughout the year.

In addition to the whales, the dolphins enjoy the abundance of fish that are attracted to the warmer currents, so you should have plenty of opportunity to enjoy their company and they patrol around the whale-watching boats.

The Azores are also a fantastic place to visit for migratory birds at different times of the year, and their special eco-system means that they offer plant and flower enthusiasts the opportunity to see lots of species that they wont see in other parts of the world.

Of course, the Azores are more than just a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, their rugged landscape makes them a favourite for walkers, but there are also enough flat bits for them to have a selection of great golf courses too.

As part of our Destination Portugal portfolio, we can offer a range of holidays to the Azores throughout the year. We can also provide you with guides to the wildlife, flora and fauna that you can expect to see so you can investigate the islands for yourselves. You can stay on one island, or engage in some wonderful island-hopping.

There are a small number of direct flights from the UK, but the majority of flights to the Azores go via Lisbon, making this a unique two-centre holiday opportunity.

It is our intention to organise a selection of guided tours to the Azores during 2011 and 2012. These will be escorted by experts in these islands' bird and plant life. The group size on these tours will be limited to a maximum of 16 people, which will give you enough time with our experts to learn from them, but also to share your knowledge with them and other members of the party.

We are currently working on our programmes and the actual dates that the tours will operate. If you are interested in joining one of these itineraries, please use the Contact Us facility on this website to register with us, so that we can send you information about the programmes as soon as they are available. Please indicate your particular interest, whether for bird watching, flora & fauna or whale & dolphin watching so that we can build this into our planning.

If you would like more general information about the Azores, or would like to combine a trip to the Azores with a visit to the Portuguese mainland, then please call our experienced team of Portugal travel experts on 08451 222640.
